Do we need woff files?
Short answer: no.
Long answer: it depends. In case you need to support browsers which haven't been updated since 2015/2016 you may need woff files, but other than that all common browsers support woff2 files. For a more detailed overview please see: https://caniuse.com/?search=woff2
We don't produce woff by default. If it's required, please let us know.
How do you calculate the vertical metrics?
Short Answer: pure calculation + visual balance (a compromise between both)
Long answer: As a basis we use the specification of Google: https://googlefonts.github.io/gf-guide/metrics.html
From there we decide for each project individually what values make the most sense, based on the main character set.
Of cause we take a closer look at the characters with the most greatest ascender and lowers descender. But more important is main character set. In most of the cases it is Latin, but from time to time it‘s Arabic or Thai.
